Information on the elevation grid...

I am currently using a browser that does not support the elevation grid node of VRML. I am locked into VRwave because I need VRML on my HP9000. VRwave provides all of the source code (in Java) for it's browser - a darn nice feature. I was wondering if anybody could point me at pseudo-code or an algorithm to build the elevation grid. The vrwave parser already handles the elevation grid node, it just doesn't do anything with the information.

Pretty much any info on elevation grid (other than spec explainations) would be most appreciated!
