Wouldn't it be loverly to have a collection of DEMs
and have a program you could enter with coordinates
(and perhaps LOD) and out would come the points
from the appropriate DEMs as an ElevationGrid?
A little trickier would be generating the appropriate
texture (you'd probably want to turn the textures
into PNMs first).  But neither one of these is beyond
the reach of computer science -- it's just a DP
problem.

In fact, do they not do that for Virtual Croatia?
