the tool I wish for more than anything

okay
so I've been struggling with representing terrains in VRML
since it was VRML 1 and you had to use IndexedFaceSet ;{
and now I've got ElevationGrid to work with
and a couple of decent DEM ==> VRML converter tools are around
but...

the tool I wish for more than anything
is one which would let me slice up a DEM

A "Realworld" Example:

I have some hypertext I maintain about Bosnia-Herzegovina
(http://ariadne.iz.net/~jeffs/BosniaHerzegovina/)
and one of the documents talks about cultural geography
and uses 2D maps to try to make a couple of points
which could be made sooooo much easier with a VRML map...
but the area overlaps the corners of 4 DEMs
totalling probably around 100Mb
and I don't want to have to serve up most of Europe
and a big hunk of Asia
just to show Southeastern Europe ;}
